About BIR, Himachal Pradesh
Bir, located in the Baijnath Tehsil of the Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh, is a picturesque town renowned for its Tibetan culture, scenic monasteries, and vibrant NGO community. Situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters and connected by NH-20, Bir is approximately midway between Baijnath and Joginder Nagar.
The town is home to a large Tibetan colony, which was established after the Dalai Lama was granted asylum in Dharamshala. This blend of Tibetan culture and natural beauty makes Bir a unique and peaceful destination.
Bir has also become a major hub for paragliding, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. The strong thermals and consistent weather conditions at Bir, coupled with the ideal take-off point at Billing (at 8,000 feet), make it one of the top paragliding locations globally. The breathtaking 17 km stretch between Bir and Billing offers unparalleled views of the Dhauladhar range, with the opportunity to explore beautiful camping sites and trekking routes, including trails leading to Manali and Chamba.
Bir regularly hosts international paragliding events, such as the Paragliding World Cup, further cementing its status as an adventure sports destination. Whether you’re soaring through the skies or exploring its trekking routes, Bir offers a perfect blend of adventure and serenity for all.
